This course is a comprehensive description of English grammar for prospective teachers of English as a Second Language. The course provides students with an introductory understanding of the fundamentals of English grammar and ESL grammar. The course will focus on how various functions of English grammatical forms are addressed in a student-centred ESL classroom and an ESL curriculum. Emphasis will be given to the specific grammatical structures, ranging from basic to advanced levels of proficiency that are taught in most ESL classes. Students will gain an awareness of how grammatical structures are practised in grammar activities and materials. Error identification and common learner errors will also be addressed. This course prepares students for Pedagogical Grammar 2, which focuses on the methodology, techniques and principles of teaching grammar in an ESL class.
