Program Overview

Math and science are critical requirements to move into many in-demand jobs. Structural designer, construction manager, radio frequency field technician, computer-aided drafting and design operator, and civil engineer are just some of the jobs based on a solid understanding of math and science. Consider the numbers: technicians, skilled trades and engineers are among the top job categories around the world. Demand will only grow in those and other areas as 75 per cent of new jobs created from 2009 to 2018 will be in high-skill occupations – but the reality is that the majority of high school students stop taking science in Grade 10. And that’s where Humber’s General Arts and Science – Technology certificate program can help.

Our program is designed to help you improve and build on your math, science and English skills – skills that are absolutely necessary to help you pursue a career in engineering and technology. Humber’s General Arts and Science – Technology certificate program can help you prepare for future studies in the field of your choice. It is a preparatory program that will help you develop the skills and knowledge you will need with courses in chemistry, physics, technical mathematics and writing, AutoCAD and technology foundations. In a special integrated skills course, you will improve academic skills, explore learning styles and decide on the career path that best suits your abilities and interests.

The Humber Advantage

In addition to getting the educational background you need for a technology related program, you will be in small classes and labs where you receive individual attention and support.

You will have an academic advisor who will help you in the transition to postsecondary studies, assist you in making academic decisions, introduce you to the many student services available at the college, and guide you through the application process for your target program.

On completion of the program, you will receive the G.A.S. Technology Certificate.

Founder and Executive Director, Trust 15

Marcia Brown is the Executive Director and Founder of Trust 15, a youth community support organization in her home community of Rexdale. Trained as an educator, Brown built Trust 15 by canvassing her neighbourhood with flyers and creating an after-school program for 15 girls at a local community church. Today, as head of the organization, she provides critical mentoring opportunities to hundreds of boys and girls and their families. Brown is celebrated and awarded as a community leader, activist and enabler, and is a resilient advocate for youth in need of self-confidence and self-esteem.

Jamil Jivani

Jamil Jivani

Activist and Author

Jamil Jivani is a lawyer, activist, professor and author, whose work centres on issues impacting youth, and low-income families. He founded the Citizen Empowerment Project to empower underrepresented communities to engage with national legal and policy issues such as police carding and voter turnout. A Yale Law graduate, he was named the 2015 Young Lawyer of the Year by the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers. In 2018, Jivani authored Why Young Men: Rage, Race and the Crisis of Identity, a critically acclaimed book recounting his experiences and using them to open discussions around finding a solution to these issues.

How To Become An Apprentice

Becoming an Apprentice

Find an employer willing to sponsor you as an apprentice.

Contact the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development to register as an apprentice.

Work with your employer approximately one year before attending Humber.

How to Apply

Domestic Students

Applications to Humber are made through ontariocolleges.ca. Be sure to submit your application by the equal consideration deadline of February 1. You may apply after February 1, however, post-February 1 applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis depending on the availability of the space in the program.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet all the requirements below in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission decisions will not be released by phone.

Admission selection is based on the following requirement:

  • Academic

    To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

    • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:
      • Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U or equivalent)

    or

    or

    All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy.

    Post-admission testing in writing and basic mathematics is required. Applicants may be counselled into an alternative choice based on test results. While the General Arts and Science programs have been designed to prepare students to enter a major course of study in their chosen area, a General Arts and Science certificate or diploma is neither a guarantee, nor a requirement for entry into subsequent programs at Humber or elsewhere.

    Selection: Admission selection is based on the academic criteria indicated. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission.

    Mature Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet all listed course requirements.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

    College Transfer Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

    University Transfer Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or university courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or university courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.
