The part-time Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL/TESL) certificate is a postgraduate 140-hour TESL Canada and TESL Ontario accredited program. It consists of 120 hours of course work plus 10 hours of English as a second language (ESL) classroom observation and a 10-hour teaching practicum. The TESL program is designed to be completed in one semester part time - however, students have the flexibility to complete the certificate at their own pace over two or three semesters. Courses can be taken in any order except for TSOL 115, which is the last course in the program. All observations and practicum teaching are completed in ESL classes at Humber College.

The certificate program is a hybrid program consisting of both in-class and online classes allowing students to take both at the same time. The TESOL Certificate from Humber College provides the necessary training for graduates to teach English as a foreign language (EFL) overseas and ESL in programs across Canada that do not require TESL Ontario or equivalent accreditation.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive Humber College’s TESOL credential and are able to apply to TESL Canada for certification upon meeting their certification requirements.

Upon graduation, students in the Humber part-time TESOL program have the opportunity to apply to work as Writing Tutors in our Math and Writing Centres. This will allow graduates additional experience working with college ESL students outside the teaching practicum.

The TESOL program through Humber College gave me the confidence and skills I needed to teach second language acquisition at the college level. I found the program to be the perfect balance of theory and practice, giving me the tools I needed to be a successful ESL instructor. I really liked the flexibility in the program and how the online and in-class portions of the program spoke to each other. It was the right balance of academic rigour and practical, in-class application. The instructors in the TESOL program at Humber College were accommodating, approachable, and knowledgeable.
Mark Andrade, 2016 graduate

Getting enrolled at Humber in the TESOL Diploma has been one of the best decisions of my life. I did thorough research before signing up and this course lived up to my expectations. I had my Masters in Education and English Literature alongside extensive experience in teaching in my home country, but I knew this wasn’t enough for a newcomer like me. The TESOL Diploma opened the doors for learning about latest methodologies and teaching skills. The faculty are one of the best in the industry who go above and beyond for the students. I would like to specifically mention the practicum aspect of this Diploma which gives you an insight into real teaching in real Humber classes. I learned so much from my practicum supervisors which cannot be found in any books. I was so inspired by this course that I went on to do TESL Ontario and now I am happily employed with one of the best employers. Priyanka Singh, 2017 graduate

Humber’s TESOL program not only provided me with the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively teach English as a second language, but it also taught me new techniques which further enhanced my teaching in other courses. The professors in Humber’s TESOL program are experts in the field, and they genuinely want to help their students succeed. They strive to pass on their knowledge and expertise to all students in the program and this, combined with the collaborative and collegial atmosphere that existed among the students, made this program one of the most rewarding experiences of my academic career. Colin Graham, 2016 graduate
