Academic Upgrading (AU)

Welcome to the Academic Upgrading (AU) program at Humber College.

The AU program is a tuition-free, non-postsecondary program offered at the North Campus, and classes are usually scheduled Monday to Friday from 8:55am to 3:15pm. The AU program is an Employment Ontario program funded by the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities.

To be eligible for the program, you must be:

  • 19 years of age or older
  • legally entitled to work in Canada (Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident)
  • a resident of Ontario (show government-issued photo ID)

The faculty and staff in the program are committed to helping you form a clearer picture of your career and educational goals as well as the steps that you need to take to reach those goals. Remember the key to successful learning and growth is planning.

Assessments for the fall 2019 semester have now been completed. 

The fall 2019 semester is scheduled from September 3 - December 13, 2019. The winter semester is scheduled to run from January 6 - April 17, 2020.

Applicants interested in registering for academic upgrading for the winter 2020 semester must attend one of the following information and assessment sessions (IAS) to be considered for enrolment. Kindly note that you must be registered for an assessment at least two days before the date of the assessment. To register online, click on the link below. Alternatively, you may come in person to our office at the North campus to register. After you have registered, you will receive an email with details about the time and location of the assessment. To reserve a seat in the assessment, you must confirm that you will be attending on the date you select.

The dates to register for Information and Assessment Session dates for winter 2020 enrolment are:

  • October 16 (session is full)
  • October 30
  • November 6
  • November 20

This Employment Ontario program is funded by the Ontario government, Ministry Training, College, and Universities (MTCU).

The purpose of the Academic Upgrading Program is to help learners to improve their English, math skills, and computer skills as well as biology and chemistry in lab-based environments.

The Academic Upgrading Program also offers learners assistance in the following:

- becoming comfortable in a college environment
- developing an individualized training plan
- defining career and education goals through self-assessment
- finding support and encouragement that leads to success

If you are interested in learning more about the Academic Upgrading program, you must attend an Information and Assessment Session to establish eligibility. Please email us at academicupgrading@humber.ca.

Students who complete ACE Communications, ACE Mathematics, ACE Computers and ACE Skills for Success, and earn a cumulative grade point average of 60% or higher, will receive a Certificate of Completion from Humber College. In addition, students who complete these four courses and earn a grade of 70% or higher in each of these courses also earn the ACE Certificate (Academic and Career Entrance).

The Academic Upgrading Program is FREE to learners who qualify.

This Employment Ontario project, program or service is funded by the Ontario government.

The ministry has recognized our ACE Communications course (ACEC E10) as equivalent to high school grade 12 English (MAP4C) and our ACE Business Math course (ACEC M20) as equivalent to grade 12 math (MAP4C). Refer to the table below for other course equivalencies:

Transport Support Allowances

For Academic Upgrading learners who qualify, a transportation allowance is available. Learners will be provided with a transportation allowance for the days in school. Learners must apply for this taxable allowance.

Other Services

Counseling - A counselor is available to assist all Academic Upgrading learners with career counseling. Humber College also has a Counseling and Disability Services Office which may provide additional counseling services.

Peer Tutoring - A college tutoring service is available. Academic Upgrading students must apply for this service. The Peer Tutoring Office is located on the 3rd floor of the Learning Resource Commons (LRC).

Parking and Lockers

There is parking available. Visit http://www.humber.ca/publicsafety/parking for Humber North's parking information.

Lockers can be rented for the semester. Visit http://www.humber.ca/publicsafety/services/lockers for locker rental details. A Humber student number is required. 

Other College Services - Academic Upgrading learners have access to most college services. Student numbers and ID cards are required.
