Our Program

Humber’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) certificate program is an intensive, full-time academic pathway program. The program integrates reading, writing, listening and speaking skills with an academic focus. You will also benefit from study skills and individual tutoring support. The curriculum is geared toward non-native speakers of English who want to improve their writing, communication and critical thinking skills for entry into college diploma, degree and postgraduate programs or for further professional development.

It consists of:

  • 18 hours per week of in-class instruction
  • additional hours every week in completing individual and collaborative e-learning projects and tasks under the guidance of a Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)-certified lab co-ordinator.

Our faculty are highly respected, dedicated professionals who have been teaching, publishing and working in the English as a Second Language ESL/EAP field for many years. They all hold postgraduate credentials including solid training in ESL/EAP teaching.

Improving your language skills in the EAP program has the additional benefit of allowing you to become familiar with Humber faculty, staff, administration and campus life. The whole Humber community guides your transition into your future academic study at Humber.

Our advisory committee provides regular review of and input into our curriculum, ensuring our program is always on the cutting edge of industry developments.

Courses Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Develop, through general knowledge gained in a wide range of subjects, insight into both self and society.
  • Develop flexibility and clarity of both thought and expression in order to develop communications and competence to a level required by business and industry.
  • Understand and utilize critical thinking processes and problem solving techniques.
  • Examine and evaluate various aspects of our changing society to assist in developing a sense of personal and social responsibility as a citizen in society.

Admission to Humber Through EAP

Completion of EAP level 8 meets the language proficiency requirments for admission to most Humber programs. For students completing level 8 with no failed courses and with the appropriate grades (see below), no further IELTS or TOEFL testing is required.

EAP Pathways

Level 8 completion with 60% GPA - Humber diploma programs
Level 8 completion with 75% GPA - Humber degree programs
Level 8 completion with 80% GPA - humber postgraduate programs

International students enrolled in EAP may receive conditional offers of admission to most Humber programs.

Online EAP Placement Testing

If English is not your first language, you may need to prove your English level before starting your Humber program.  If you do not have an IELTS or TOEFL score, you can take our online EAP Placement Test.  The test checks your speaking, listening and writing.  It is in two parts and takes 2 hours in total.

Your Career

By 2030, half the world’s population is expected to speak English. Prepare now for your future by developing the skills and knowledge you need to be successful in postsecondary and postgraduate studies, and to give you a competitive edge in your professional field.
