Program Overview

Humber’s General Arts and Science – Degree Transfer certificate program will allow you to explore different subjects, develop your academic skills, and earn transfer credit towards other certificate, diploma and degree-level programs at Humber College and other colleges and universities.   

After completing this eight-month certificate, you may continue your studies in variety of program areas that also include careers in: 

  • business 
  • community & social services 
  • hospitality & tourism 
  • justice & legal studies 
  • media & public relations  

You can also transfer to our two-year General Arts and Science – University Transfer Diploma and gain more transfer credits and skills to degree programs at Humber or other university programs. 

The program has a common first semester, so you can consider your pathways with 1:1 academic advising. The program provides the perfect environment for you to learn about your choices and possibilities. Take control of your academic future and choose a pathway that will lead to your success! 

This program is for you if you are interested in: 

  • accessing free academic and personal resources such as tutoring, counselling, fitness, 1:1 academic and career advising 
  • gaining a strong academic foundation to prepare for success in degree-level programs 
  • getting ahead by earning transfer credits towards your future program 
  • learning about sustainability and gaining extra Humber Sustainability recognition
  • strengthening your skills and upgrading your grades to achieve admission requirements

Transfer Credit Opportunities  

Students who complete the Degree Transfer certificate will gain up to six transfer credits in other college and degree-level programs at Humber. 

Courses Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  1. Develop, through general knowledge gained in a wide range of subjects, insight into both self and society.
  2. Develop flexibility and clarity of thought and expression in order to develop communications competence to a level required by business and industry.
  3. Understand and utilize critical thinking processes and problem solving techniques.
  4. Examine and evaluate various aspects of our changing society to assist in developing a sense of personal and social responsibility as a citizen in society.
  5. Employ basic vocational skills drawn from the areas of the Humanities, Social and Behavioural Sciences or Vocational Studies (Business, Technology).

Education Options for GAS Degree Certificate Students

Interested in environmental and social sustainability? Think you might be headed toward a career in the green sector? If this sounds like you, consider choosing one of these two options:

Option 1: Sustainability Specializations

If you want to stand out to employers and meet other like-minded students -you can. For guided extra-curricular learning and action challenges, volunteering on campus, and taking 1-3 eco-focused courses as part of your program, choose one of two Sustainability Specializations.

Option 2: Sustainability Stream

Want to earn more than a Specialization? Choose the Sustainability Stream if you’re pretty sure a green career is in your future and you need some help getting started. In the Sustainability Stream, you will take core courses in sustainability, and you’ll complete work that is focused on sustainability and the green career sector.

Marcia Brown

Founder and Executive Director, Trust 15

Marcia Brown is the Executive Director and Founder of Trust 15, a youth community support organization in her home community of Rexdale. Trained as an educator, Brown built Trust 15 by canvassing her neighbourhood with flyers and creating an after-school program for 15 girls at a local community church. Today, as head of the organization, she provides critical mentoring opportunities to hundreds of boys and girls and their families. Brown is celebrated and awarded as a community leader, activist and enabler, and is a resilient advocate for youth in need of self-confidence and self-esteem.

Jamil Jivani

Activist and Author

Jamil Jivani is a lawyer, activist, professor and author, whose work centres on issues impacting youth, and low-income families. He founded the Citizen Empowerment Project to empower underrepresented communities to engage with national legal and policy issues such as police carding and voter turnout. A Yale Law graduate, he was named the 2015 Young Lawyer of the Year by the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers. In 2018, Jivani authored Why Young Men: Rage, Race and the Crisis of Identity, a critically acclaimed book recounting his experiences and using them to open discussions around finding a solution to these issues.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet all the requirements below in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission decisions will not be released by phone.

Admission selection is based on the following 3 requirements:

  • Academic

    To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

    • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:
      • Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U or equivalent)

    or

    or

    Post-admission testing in writing and basic mathematics is required. Applicants may be counselled into an alternative choice based on test results. While the General Arts and Science programs have been designed to prepare students to enter a major course of study in their chosen area, a General Arts and Science certificate or diploma is neither a guarantee, nor a requirement, for entry into subsequent programs at Humber or elsewhere.

    Mature Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

    College Transfer Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

    University Transfer Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or university courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or university courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

  • English Language Proficiency

    All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy.

  • International Credit Evaluation

    Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a WES or ICAS evaluation.

TO A PARTNER INSTITUTION

Bachelor of Science (BSc) - Social Work

Graduates of Humber's General Arts and Science - University Transfer one-year certificate program are invited to apply to continue their studies at the State University of New York - Buffalo State College. Graduates must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 and 45 earned credit hours to be considered for advanced standing in the Bachelor of Science, Social Work program. Humber graduates will be given the opportunity to complete all program requirements in approximately four semesters of full-time study (15 credit hours per semester).

Bachelor of Science (BSc) Business Administration

Graduates of Humber's General Arts and Science - University Transfer one-year certificate program are invited to apply to continue their studies at the State University of New York - Buffalo State College. Graduates must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 and "C" or better in Math courses to be considered for advanced standing in the Bachelor of Science, Business Administration program. Humber graduates will be given the opportunity to complete all program requirements in approximately four semesters of full-time study (15 credit hours per semester).

Bachelor of Science Early Childhood and Childhood Education (Elementary Education)

Graduates of Humber's General Arts and Science - University Transfer one-year certificate program are invited to apply to continue their studies at the State University of New York - Buffalo State College. Graduates must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and SAT/ACT/GRE/MAT scores (exam waivers may be applied) to be considered for advanced standing in the Bachelor of Science, Early Childhood and Childhood Education (Elementary Education) program. Humber graduates will be given the opportunity to complete all program requirements in approximately four semesters of full-time study (15 credit hours per semester).

Bachelor of Arts Humanities/Social Science

Humber and Bishop's University have partnered to facilitate a transfer opportunity in which graduates of Humber's General Arts and Science Certificate with the appropriate prerequisite qualifications and grades are eligible for advanced standing into Bishop's Bachelor of Arts, Humanities/Social Science program.

Applicants may be eligible for:

  • 15 transfer credits if they have achieved a GPA of 70-79.9%
  • 30 transfer credits if they have achieved a GPA of 80% or greater

How to Apply

Applications to Humber are made through ontariocolleges.ca. Be sure to submit your application by the equal consideration deadline of February 1. You may apply after February 1, however, post-February 1 applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis depending on the availability of the space in the program.
