Foundations of Everyday EnglishNEW

Certificate of Completion | ENGL

This certificate program is designed for learners at the beginner level (A1 and A2) who aim to build the foundational English skills necessary for everyday communication. Through interactive lessons and practical, real-world tasks, students will practise English in practical contexts that reflect real-life situations such as shopping, making appointments, or giving directions and develop confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing for everyday purposes. Each course integrates digital learning with live, interactive sessions to provide hands-on opportunities for learners to collaborate and solve everyday challenges using English. By completing this program, students will gain the essential language skills needed to communicate efficiently and confidently in English-speaking environments.

  • Complete real-world tasks such as giving basic directions, ordering food or describing their daily routines.

Method of Delivery

This program will be offered through both synchronous and asynchronous delivery modes. Learners will meet their instructor weekly for a live 2-hour interactive synchronous session. In addition, learners will also engage in asynchronous learning.

English Language Placement Test

The placement test was designed to help you informally assess your English language proficiency to gain a better idea of which course to begin your English studies. If you have no previous English language experience, you are welcome to take the test but should register for ENGE 100 - Foundational English 1. The placement test focuses on knowledge of basic grammatical structures; it does not evaluate oral and written skills. The placement test contains 50 multiple-choice questions. It is recommended that you take the test without the use of any study aids to obtain a more accurate result. Take the English Placement Test now.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

Learners with prior learning in the English language as confirmed by the placement test may be eligible for a course credit in recognition of their prior learning. The placement test will indicate the recommended course that learners should register for. If the placement test recommends that a learner starts the certificate at the second course (ENGE 101) or the third course (ENGE 102), then the learner can apply for a PLAR for the first course (and possibly the second course). The learner should first register for the recommended course after taking the placement test, then send an email to cplliberalarts@humber.ca to apply for the PLAR. There is a fee of $86 per course associated with the application for PLAR.
