Abstract
This project studied the problem of female Indigenous incarceration and its association with having experienced abuse in residential schools in the Canadian Prairies. The authors conducted a thematic analysis of female Indigenous narratives focusing on childhood experiences in the residential school system, and how it leads to a perpetual cycle of increased criminalization and incarceration. Recommendations tailored for stakeholders including politicians, policymakers, the criminal justice system, professors, researchers, and human rights organizations are offered. These include changes to the Canadian school curriculum, and the establishment of social programs for supporting Indigenous peoples.
