Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic created an education disruption. In Toronto, distance learning was implemented to prevent learning loss across primary and secondary schools; students with limited digital resources struggled in this virtual environment. Using data from the Toronto census and qualitative data about poverty and distance learning experiences, this research explored the lived experiences of low-socioeconomic status households and distance learning experiences. We found that unrealistic teaching schemes, distraction problems and technical issues were the major challenges for low-income students struggling with distance learning. Reforming education to enhance digital learning readiness is highly recommended to aid all students.
