Abstract
The rising tide of recreational cannabis use sparks critical questions about its impact on road safety, particularly among vulnerable young drivers. This study delves into this complex and evolving landscape, exploring how youth perceptions, driving behaviors, and actual crash risks intersect with legalized cannabis use. We analyzed clinical research findings encompassing simulated driving studies, surveys gauging youth perspectives, and accident data, to paint a nuanced picture of the intricate dynamics at play. Our findings reveal a concerning gap between youth perceptions and reality. While many young people underestimate the impairing effects of cannabis on driving, studies in controlled environments paint a stark picture of compromised performance and heightened crash risk. This disconnect emphasizes the urgent need for targeted, evidence-based educational interventions tailored to youth perspectives and risk perception.
