Program Overview

Humber’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) certificate program is an intensive, full-time academic pathway program. The curriculum is geared toward non-native speakers of English who want to improve their language competence and fluency in writing, communication and critical thinking skills for entry into most college diploma, degree and graduate certificate programs or for further professional development.  The program focuses on communicative academic English and integrates listening and reading (receptive skills) and speaking and writing (productive skills), together with in-person and virtual classroom interaction and mediation language activities and strategies, to support students in achieving their language goals. You will benefit from innovative language study skills and accessible individual tutoring support.

The program consists of:

  • eight levels that each run for seven weeks. The length of study will be based on the assigned entry level which is determined by the English proficiency test results. For placement level information, visit here.
  • 20 hours per week of in-class and online instruction (blended learning)
  • additional hours every week practising and strengthening your skills by completing computer assisted language learning (CALL) activities including additional reading activities, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and digital literacy skills, under the guidance of a Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) certified lab co-ordinator

Our faculty are dedicated professionals who have been trained in ESL/EAP teaching. Humber’s EAP professors have been teaching, publishing, and working in the English as a Second Language ESL/EAP field for many years. They all hold graduate credentials.

Improving your language skills in the EAP program has the additional benefit of allowing you to become familiar with Humber faculty, staff, administration and campus life. Our college community guides your transition into your future academic study at Humber.

This program is supported by an advisory committee which provides regular review of our curriculum and input that guides curriculum improvements. This committee helps us ensure our program is always on the forefront of post-secondary and industry developments.

Students who are placed into Levels 7 and 8 will be given the option to study at the North campus, Lakeshore Campus or completely online dependent on enrolment and availability.

Admission to Humber Through EAP

Completion of EAP level 8 meets the language proficiency requirements for admission to most Humber programs. For students completing level 8 with no failed courses and with the appropriate grades (see below), no further IELTS or TOEFL testing is required.

Steps to Starting Your EAP Program

Step 1. Apply for the Program

Apply through OCAS (domestic students) or Humber International (international students).

Step 2. Take an EAP Placement Test

You have some options for pre-placement into your EAP level. Submit your Duolingo, IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or CAEL result to Humber. You only need to take one of these tests, and we will use your score to place you in an appropriate EAP level. Once we review your test results, your offer letter will be issued.

Step 3. Confirm your Offer

Upon receiving your Letter of Acceptance (LOA), you need to confirm your offer on MyHumber (international students) or OCAS (domestic students).

Step 4. Pay your Deposit & Tuition Balance

After you’ve confirmed your offer, you need to pay or arrange to pay the full tuition balance by the due date specified on your LOA. Domestic students may apply for OSAP but are advised to complete their applications at least one month before classes begin to avoid delays in funding.

Step 5. Upload your Study Permit or Status Document

International students must upload their study permit via MyHumber. Convention refugees and protected persons are required to hold a valid study permit and must submit this to an International Student Advisor.

Step 6. Register for your Level

Once the registration period opens, domestic students will be able to register for their level via MyHumber. Humber staff will register international students into the EAP program. If you have problems with registration, please check for holds on your student account. You must clear your holds before registration can be processed.

Step 7. Attend Orientation & Begin Classes!

Check the date for your orientation to the EAP program. Humber staff will send you details about the time and location for your orientation. At orientation, you will find where your classes are and see the facilities and services available to you at Humber.
